Mineirão will be shut down in July 2010

It has been announced that the biggest stadium in Minas Gerais, Mineirão, will be closed for matches in July 2010.

During the first semester of 2010, Mineirão will still be stage for matches of the State championship; during that period, minor works will be done to reinforce the infrastructure.

mineirao-2014After July, the stadium will have to be closed for demolishion and rebuilding of certain areas; for example, the entire field plane will have to be lowered in more than 3.5 meters (10 feet), so as to allow a better viewing from anywhere in the stadium.

The Mineirão should be reopened, at latest, in early 2013 (actual dates depend on the money that Government and  investors will put into the project), for the Confederation Cup. The image shows how the new Mineirão should look like.

Neither of the major teams in Minas Gerais, Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro, have own stadia. So, after Mineirão (which belongs to the State of Minas Gerais) is closed, matches of those teams will have to be played in the Estádio Independência, near the center Belo Horizonte.

The Independência stadium has already a History, as it was built to host matches of the 1950 World Cup; see more in another post.
